Noni Madueke may not just be Bukayo Saka’s backup. Arsenal insiders believe the £52m signing could also challenge on the left wing this season.
That’s the question likely to divide opinion among Gooners, despite Arsenal seemingly ticking every box in this summer’s business.
Some fans remain hopeful that moves for Rodrygo or Anthony Gordon are still on the cards. But after splashing £52 million on Noni Madueke, there’s a growing feeling Arsenal may choose not to invest further in wide positions.
It would be a gamble, but perhaps one they’re now willing to take.
Although many view the former PSV Eindhoven star as direct cover for Bukayo Saka on the right, those close to the player insist he brings much more to the table.
Saul Isaksson-Hurst, Madueke’s personal coach for the past four years, recently explained why the winger could push for a role on Arsenal’s left flank as he begins his Gunners career.
“He can play either side,” Isaksson-Hurst told the Evening Standard, rejecting the idea that Madueke is limited to the right. “He is left-footed and doesn’t have to be an inverted winger. He can do a job there on the left and be successful, I’m really confident about that.
“He’s going to see a lot of the ball and get chances to break lines. Whether there’s space beyond the defender or not, he’s effective in both situations.
“I think he has all the tools. For me, looking at how things are developing, having [Bukayo] Saka on one wing and him on the other could be England’s two wide players for the next few years.”
For Arsenal fans concerned by the lack of fresh movement on a new left winger, those words might offer reassurance.

Was Madueke really brought in just to sit on the bench?
With Mikel Arteta’s reputation for spotting potential, it seems unlikely Arsenal spent £52 million on a pure backup. Gabriel Martinelli may now need to raise his game, as he could face unexpected competition for his starting spot.
If Madueke’s adaptation to the left doesn’t click straight away, Arsenal could still turn to Eberechi Eze, who is widely expected to sign as another wide option.
So even if the Gunners do not pursue another winger before the window closes, the Madueke deal may have already ticked that box.
Do you think Madueke can genuinely challenge on both flanks, Gooners? Or do Arsenal still need one more wide player?
