Arsenal had looked far and wide in their search for a number nine and, after snapping up Sporting’s Viktor Gyökeres, one pundit feels they should have looked closer to home. The Gunners were primarily linked with two strikers all summer and we probably all know who they are. The build-up to the signing of Gyökeres is arguably the story of the summer so far, as the Gunners could have ended up with a completely different player. Arsenal got their man nevertheless and, despite firing a blank against Villarreal, the player is set to play a pivotal role in the coming season.
However, one pundit believes Arsenal might have missed a trick by not considering an outgoing Liverpool striker instead of pursuing Gyökeres. Dean Saunders also feels the same way about Manchester United and their pursuit of Benjamin Šeško. As reported by talkSPORT, “Nunez, he’s up for grabs. Would you rather not have Nunez than Sesko and Gyokeres?” Saunders said. “They paid a lot of money for them, and I thought, ‘He’s up for grabs.’ I would take a chance on him.”
He added, “He’s got every finish in his locker, both feet, headers, he’s gone round the keeper, he’s slotted the keeper, he’s chipped the keeper, he’s scored from distance. We’ve seen him do every finish, but somehow he manages to conjure up a miss – I don’t know how many times he hit the post and the crossbar last season.”
A host of Premier League clubs have spent big on a conventional number nine this summer. Arsenal have already signed Gyökeres, Manchester United are closing in on a move for Šeško, and Liverpool have their eyes on Alexander Isak despite spending big on Hugo Ekitike. Their transfer activity means there is no room for Darwin Nunez.
The Uruguayan is closing in on a move away after a largely unsuccessful spell with the Reds. That said, Saunders believes he still has something to offer and said he would not be surprised if the striker proves successful elsewhere. “There’s definitely a player in there, you look at him and think, ‘What a handful he is to play against,’” he continued. “He scored a lot of goals for Benfica in his second season and a couple of seasons ago he got 20-odd for Liverpool. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nunez goes somewhere else and scores 20 goals next season.”
Darwin Nunez is closing in on a move to Al Hilal after they reached an agreement in principle with the Reds. On the other hand, Arsenal and Manchester United’s new strikers will do battle on the opening day of the new season. The Gunners will be hoping to be prepared for their season opener following successive losses in pre-season, prior to the Athletic Club match.
