Arteta discusses Nwaneri’s future as youngster gives insight into Marseille move | OneFootball

Mikel Arteta says there are no plans for Arsenal to recall Ethan Nwaneri from his loan spell at Marseille, following an injury to Mikel Merino.

Nwaneri joined the Ligue 1 club on loan until the end of the season and scored on his debut for the club.

A serious foot injury for Merino, who could miss the rest of the season, has sparked Arsenal’s desire to strengthen in midfield.

But Arteta says the plan is still for Nwaneri to develop away from Arsenal having struggled to break into the team this season.

“We made the decision,” he said.

“What I would love to see from Ethan is that he scores that goal every three days, that he plays a lot of minutes, he gets the exposure he needs, he continues to grow mentally, physically and with the technical and tactical aspects that are necessary at this level.

“That’s the reason that we’ve done it, because we believe that was the right context and the right coach for him to do that and hopefully that’s going to happen.”

Nwaneri also says he is enjoying life at Marseille, and the opportunity to work up his fitness following a lack of game time this campaign.

“I wasn’t 100% when I arrived, but I’m feeling better now,” the 18-year-old said.

“We’re working with the staff to get there, but I feel good.

“Marseille is a big club. The coach, the supporters, everything is extraordinary. I didn’t think twice about it. It’s a great experience to have under my belt.”
