Goalkeeping coach Sebastião Martins, known as Arzul, is returning to Santos just over a year after leaving. According to Diario Do Peixe, he is rejoining at the invitation of president Marcelo Teixeira and the board.
He departed in January last year, then joined Guarani in May and had remained there since. The move takes him back to a club where he worked for nearly 30 years.
He was let go after the team’s promotion and was informed during the squad’s return last year. At the time he was upset with the manner of his departure.
His farewell marked 28 years of service, 1,035 first-team matches under 23 head coaches, and thanks to many goalkeepers, plus 46 from the academy.
He now joins Rogério Maia and Denis Gago in the first-team goalkeeping department.
A Santos native, the 54-year-old began as a centre forward, later playing in goal for Portuguesa Santista and Juventus. He debuted professionally for the Mooca club, featured for Guarujá, then moved into Santos futsal before injuries led to retirement and a coaching role.
In 2009, under then head coach Vanderlei Luxermbugo, he became first-team goalkeeping coach. He was later painted on the CT Rei Pelé wall alongside other Santos idols.
