We asked Mark Jankowski to give us his match ratings and player comments after Aston Villa 4 Newcastle 1.

Jason Tindall and co. got things badly wrong on an outing down to the Midlands.

Two excellent recent results saw them stick with an unchanged 11 for the third game in six days with disastrous effects.

My ratings and comments for the Newcastle United players after Saturday at Villa Park:

Pope – 6

He made some important saves without which we could have been behind further.

I’m not sure he could have done much with any of the goals.

Trippier – 5

The first of many of our line up who looked like they were worse for wear after starting three games in six days.

He was just a fraction too slow on both sides of the ball.

Wasted several set-pieces too.

Schar – 5

He was unlucky with the deflection for the first Villa goal and managed to get us back on terms, but Schar, another of our 30+ players who looked jaded for much of the game.

Burn – 5

Dan Burn grafted today but he was left lunging for challenges too often.

Probably our best defender but that’s not much of a compliment today. Had an OG too.

Tino – 5

He got up and down very well in the first half but didn’t deliver the quality of ball we’ve become used to over recent weeks.

Was quiet in the second but we shouldn’t rely on our left back to get us going.

Bruno – 5

He looked lively at times but in truth it wasn’t one of his better days.

Looked like he could have potentially earned us a penalty while we were still in the game and kept grafting throughout but it wasn’t nearly enough today.

Tonali – 5

Villa seemed conscious to keep the ball away from wherever Tonali was.

He tracked Watkins early run well only for a poor clearance to allow the ball to come straight back.

Continued to close things down but was not massively involved in the game.

Joelinton – 4

Another player who faded massively in the second half.

First half he looked physically dominant, winning a number of duels with Kamara.

Second half the tables turned and he often came off second best.

Murphy – 4

His recent stellar form seemed a distant memory in an abject display.

Murphy would have been one of my prime candidates for a rest today.

Completely lost Maatsen for Villas second.

Hopefully he can put today behind him before Ipswich next week.

Isak – 4

He never really got into the game in dangerous areas.

He looked threatening from wide areas in the first half but never got into it second half and was deservedly withdrawn.

Barnes – 4

Despite his glittering form over recent weeks Barnes would have been my other candidate to be rested today.

I would much rather have seen Gordon’s pace in behind to unsettle Cash.

He certainly gave it a go, I feel like I’ve said that a lot, but the longer things went on the less effective he looked.

I’ve rated the subs collectively as they were all introduced too late and as such, it minimised their potential impact.

It’s the best Wilson has looked recently but that’s a fairly low bar.
