Aston Villa are working to secure Emerson Royal as their first addition of the summer.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, talks are ongoing with Flamengo and Villa hope to agree a fee below £10 million.

Royal is targeted to provide cover and competition for first-choice right-back Matty Cash. Recruiting a right-back is a leading priority, with Andres Garcia expected to depart either permanently or on loan. The move is regarded as good value given financial restrictions.

The 27-year-old joined Flamengo from AC Milan last summer, having previously spent three years at Tottenham between 2021 and 2024, making more than 100 appearances. He already has Premier League and Champions League experience.

Emery also wants a striker and two attacking wide players. Newcastle’s Harvey Barnes and West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen are of interest, as is Paris Saint-Germain teenager Ibrahim Mbaye.

How much Villa can spend will be shaped by outgoings, and what happens with Morgan Rogers will largely define their summer. The England international is a top target for Arsenal, though the Premier League champions are yet to cement their interest with a formal approach.

Elsewhere, Victor Lindelof has played down injury fears after going off during Sweden’s 1-1 draw with Japan at the World Cup. Captaining his country, the defender was substituted in the 87th minute and later said he had suffered severe cramp in both calves. The draw secured Sweden’s progress to the last-32.
