Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are about to complete the signing of Marco Asensio.
That is according to The Athletic, which has reported that Premier League club Villa have reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain over the transfer of Asensio before the window closes next Monday.
The report has claimed that Villa will sign the former Real Madrid winger on a loan deal from PSG.
Villa manager Emery is reportedly “a long-term admirer of Asensio” and the former Arsenal boss was personally interested in getting a deal done for the 29-year-old, who can also operate as an attacking midfielder.
The Athletic has claimed that as part of the deal, Villa will cover the Spain international’s full salary, which is £117,000 per week, according to SalarySport.
According to RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins on X, Asensio is expected to be in England on Sunday to undergo his medical.
Asensio is a hugely experienced player who has won a lot of major trophies in his career.
The Spain international won La Liga thrice and the UEFA Champions League on three occasions with Real Madrid and clinched the Ligue 1 title with PSG in 2023-24.
Asensio’s experience and big-game know-how will help Villa in their Champions League quest this season.
The Villans have progressed to the Round of 16 of Europe’s premier club competition, and a player like Asensio is only going to enhance their chances of going further.
Villa are also in the race for the Premier League top four, and Asensio would be a very good option for Emery.
That Emery personally wanted to sign Asensio suggests that the Villa boss has a plan for him and knows exactly how to use him.
The Spaniard has scored two goals and given four assists in 16 matches in all competitions for PSG this season.
Asensio scored five goals and gave seven assists in 31 matches in all competitions for PSG last season.
