Aston Villa remain in the spotlight for more than just their performances, and one reason is the uncertain future of Emiliano Martinez. His name continues to be linked with Manchester United, with former United scout Mick Brown telling Football Insider that he is still surprised the club failed to sign him.

According to Brown, both parties wanted the move, but it collapsed because Villa and United could not agree on a deal. Instead, United signed Senne Lammens, yet talk of another goalkeeper signing has not gone away. For United, the appeal is obvious because Martinez brings experienced presence, proven shot-stopping, and leadership that the current squad lacks. It seems likely that United may return for him in January or next summer, especially if Amorim keeps demanding a new goalkeeper.

I’m still surprised they didn’t get Martinez,” he told Football Insider.

“They wanted him, he wanted the move, but at the end of the day they couldn’t agree with Villa, so the deal collapsed.

“They’ve gone and got Lammens now, but Amorim has been saying he still wants a goalkeeper, so the recruitment team will be looking at their options.

“I have no doubt Martinez is still one of those, because he’s a top-class goalkeeper and one who would immediately solve the issues they’ve had recently.

“He’s strong, imposing, a top shot-stopper and a character in the dressing room, which it feels like they’re sorely lacking at Man United at the moment.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them go back in for him, especially with the manager still demanding a goalkeeper, whether that’s in January or next summer.”

Aston Villa should be ready for Martinez’s departure

Yet while United’s interest still matters, Aston Villa must admit that Martinez’s long-term future at the club is uncertain. The situation is shaped not just by footballing needs but also by financial pressures. Reports in May 2025 said the club needed a big sale before June to stay compliant. Martinez’s profile makes him a natural candidate.

Further complicating matters, his agent actively sought opportunities abroad, and strong links to the Saudi Pro League surfaced in July 2025. Though that move failed, it showed that Martinez’s camp is open to lucrative exits. For this reason, the club should keep scouting younger goalkeepers who can maintain quality and offer long-term security. If the Argentine leaves in the next 12 months, Villa must ensure a smooth transition and plan to avoid disruption.
