Six days. That is all that separates Marcus Rashford from either a permanent life in Catalonia or a return to the transfer wilderness.
The June 15 deadline is ticking. Barcelona have a €30m purchase option to sign the forward from Manchester United, payable in three tidy €10m instalments, but the silence from the Camp Nou is deafening. Despite Hansi Flick pulling Rashford aside to praise a stellar 14-goal, 14-assist campaign, Barca’s board are looking elsewhere. They have already signed Anthony Gordon, who has tracked north of €80m, which has effectively emptied the treasury.
Aston Villa are watching this mess unfold with keen interest. Emery knows the player intimately, having resurrected Rashford’s career during a crucial six-month loan spell at Villa Park in early 2025 before the England man chose Spain.
The player’s camp insists he is “100% focused” on staying put. He loves Barcelona. But football is a cold business, and Barca’s dithering changes the situation entirely. Manchester United won’t entertain another loan, and with Bayern Munich dangling €40m and Tottenham snooping around, Villa must act.

This is where it gets interesting. Emery knows Rashford. He coached him through the second half of the 2024/25 season at Villa Park and clearly saw something in him that Old Trafford had stopped seeing. That six-month loan produced four goals and six assists and directly facilitated Rashford’s dream move to Barcelona. Emery, more than anyone else outside of Flick, deserves credit for rebuilding this lad’s confidence.
At €30m, Rashford is an absolute steal. Villa can offer Champions League football after their top-five finish, meaning they no longer have to beg elite talent to come to Birmingham. They are a destination.
Emery needs to skip the intermediaries. No agents, no corporate fluff. He should call Rashford directly on June 16, the second Barcelona let that deadline expire. Rashford feels let down by Spain; he needs to hear a manager who actually values him. Emery has that credit in the bank.
