Barcelona are still pressing to sign Julian Alvarez this summer, although for now, Atletico Madrid continue to stand firm. However, the Catalans are banking on their defences crumbling over the coming weeks, especially now that the player himself has publicly expressed his desire to leave the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

It was last week that Alvarez told the media that he wants to leave Atleti, and this has significantly increased hope within Barcelona that he can be signed. However, they must also manage to convince their La Liga rivals to sell, which will be much easier said than done.

The Alvarez case has angered many within Atleti, but as for Alvarez’s current teammates, many of them appear willing not to stand in his way. The latest to address the matter has been Marc Pubill, who gave his thoughts to Esport3.

“Julián’s comments the other day were a bit strange. If he’s not happy at Atlético, we’ll see what happens, but I think he’ll leave. You always want a player like him in your team. But if he’s not happy there, he stops being as good.”

Barcelona hoping for post-World Cup agreement

Barcelona are currently sitting on their offer for Alvarez, which they hope will be enough for Atleti to give the green light for a transfer. They plan to submit a proposal valued at €130m once the World Cup is over, and given that they have the player’s desire to join, there is a belief that this could be enough to get a deal over the line later in the summer.

For now, Barcelona are happy to bide their time, although there are risks that come with this. If they are eventually unable to break Atleti’s resolve, they would be left scrambling to sort a contingency plan, which is why sporting director Deco must be ready for all eventualities.
