Julián Alvarez's wonder goal wasn't enough to help Atlético Madrid to secure an opening match LaLiga win as the Rojiblancos fell to a 2-1 opening match LaLiga defeat at Espanyol.
Scorers: Alvarez 37'; Rubio 73', Milla 84'
Both sides created early opportunities and the best chance fell to Atlético's debutant Dávid Hancko, who was left unmarked to head towards goal, but Marko Dmitrović comfortably held the attempt.
Julián Alvarez struck the first goal late in the opening half with a curling, inch-perfect free-kick straight into the top corner past a full-stretch Dmitrović.
Alvarez continued to receive goalscoring chances and the Argentina international was denied a second of the evening after working half a yard and firing against the post.
Espanyol pulled level with 15 minutes remaining as Miguel Rubio raced into the six-yard area to poke past Jan Oblak from Exposito's free-kick.
The Periquitos struck again in the final five minutes when Pere Milla's glancing header looped over Oblak and into the net.
Diego Simeone's side are likely to see this result as three points lost after leading for so long during the match, while Espanyol produced two late sucker punches to seal an impressive opening win at RCDE Stadium.
