Atlético-MG join Corinthians in race to sign Maycon from Shakhtar Donetsk

Corinthians, which is facing a deadlock over the stay of midfielder Maycon, has gained a new competitor to acquire him from Shakhtar Donetsk, Ukraine. That competitor is Atlético-MG. The information was initially reported by journalist Bruno Andrade from ESPN Brasil.

The Alvinegro had initially reached a verbal agreement with the Ukrainian team for the definitive purchase of the player, with a three-year contract and retaining 50% of the player's economic rights. Negotiations were being led by football executive Fabinho Soldado, who left the club in recent weeks.

However, in recent days, Corinthians ended up backing down on the terms of the deal and began to advocate for a two-year contract—valid until the end of the 2027 season. Shakhtar, in turn, remains firm and will only move forward with negotiations if the contract is valid until the end of 2028.

Thus, Atlético-MG entered the competition, agreeing to the pre-established conditions set by the Ukrainians. Corinthians, in fact, is reportedly already aware of the proposal from the Minas Gerais club. It is worth remembering that the Parque São Jorge club has a debt of 1 million euros (R$ 6.5 million) with Shakhtar, related to the player's previous loan contracts. The number 7 has been playing for Corinthians on loan since February 2022.

Maycon has been considered one of Corinthians' pillars since coach Dorival Júnior arrived at the end of April 2025, being an important piece in last year's Copa do Brasil four-time championship win over Vasco. A product of Corinthians' youth academy and champion of the 2015 Copinha with the club, the midfielder has scored 18 goals and provided 16 assists in 248 appearances for the Alvinegro's first team.

In addition, he has won five titles: Paulistão (2017, 2018, and 2025), Campeonato Brasileiro (2017), and Copa do Brasil (2025). Having dealt with some physical problems in recent years, the player had his longest run on the field in 2025 in recent seasons. In total, he played 43 matches, scoring three goals and providing one assist.
