An attacker that Southampton are looking to sign has made no decision yet about his future, as he approaches the final year of his contract.
Saints need to rebuild this summer under new boss Will Still to try to make sure that their time in the Championship is as limited as possible.
Players will go, with Trabzonspor chasing Paul Onuachu and looking to be close to doing a deal before Saints made demands over bonuses that have been ‘causing serious trouble’ in the talks.
Southampton have identified 1.FC Koln star Damion Downs as a potential addition this summer and are seriously considering him, according to German broadcaster Sky Deutschland.
Downs has just over a year left on his deal at Koln, but has made no decision yet on what to do amid interest from several sides.
Talks with Koln for the 20-year-old attacker are centring around a possible fee of €5m, despite the fact that the German side would like to keep him.
Koln managed to win the 2. Bundesliga last season to book a return to the Bundesliga, despite losing a huge nine of their 34 league games.
If Downs, a United States international, swaps Koln for Southampton, he will be swapping top flight football for second tier football.
Saints boss Still though appears to feel the club can make a compelling enough pitch to give them a chance of making the move happen.
Downs struck ten times for Koln in the 2. Bundesliga last season, as well as contributing with five assists.
He has never played for another club, having come through the youth set-up at the German giants.
Downs was born in Germany and turned out for the country’s Under-20s, but he plays his senior international football for the United States and made his debut just days ago.
