Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ended a five-match drought with the opener as Marseille beat Metz 3-1 on Friday, a timely lift for the season’s climax. The forward looked relaxed afterwards, his confidence renewed at the start of a run-in he hopes to shape.

According to L'Équipe, since arriving in February Habib Beye has made Aubameyang his first-choice centre forward, aside from an urgent debut at Brest that finished 0-2. He kept faith through the barren spell and as Amine Gouiri’s form returned, opting to pair the strikers while keeping Aubameyang central, valuing his experience, personality and work rate for a direct style.

The Metz win followed a clear arc. Aubameyang missed a big chance in the eighth minute after a defensive gift, then slid in to make it 1-0 in the 13th minute. He created for Gouiri in the 21st minute but it was not taken, and a 32nd-minute finish was ruled offside by a fine margin.

Beye argued this week that the issue was more about fortune than lucidity, highlighting Aubameyang’s late decisiveness against Lyon and the space he created at Monaco despite the numbers. He is pleased with the striker’s displays, adding it is now about regaining the efficiency the team needs.

Aubameyang said he took great heart from that support and wanted to repay it with a goal. He is now on 67 goals in the elite across all clubs from 180 matches, the second-highest among active players behind Florian Thauvin on 95. He accepted doubts can affect players, but said Marseille are capable if they lock in the right attitude and belief.
