Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has moved to make crystal clear his disappointment with the performance put forth by his players on Saturday.
This comes after Los Blancos were condemned to their first defeat of the new campaign.
Real Madrid of course marked their return to action earlier this evening, making the short trip across Spain’s capital for a derby showdown with Atlético.
The visitors headed into proceedings brimming with confidence, fresh off seven wins from seven to open the term.
When all was said and done, however, Alonso and his troops were brought crashing back down to earth.
This came by way of a 5-2 defeat, which saw Real throw away a 2-1 first-half advantage.
Los Merengues struggled badly along the way, dominated in almost all aspects of the game by a more driven and motivated Atléti side.
Drawn on his side’s performance post-match, Xabi Alonso, in turn, did not hold back in his criticism of his players:
“We deserved to lose. There’s no excuse.
“We were bad at everything. We couldn’t string passes together, we couldn’t win duels, we couldn’t create chances. We need to analyze what happened and get better, and we will.”
