Manchester United are prepared to look elsewhere to strengthen their midfield.

In recent days, Carlos Baleba emerged as United’s priority midfield target. The Cameroon international even showed willingness to move to Old Trafford this summer.

However, United are open to delaying a move for Baleba until next year due to Brighton & Hove Albion’s firm stance.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United made a formal approach to Brighton for Baleba. Still, the Seagulls refused to name their price, underlining their intention to keep hold of the midfielder, who is under contract until 2028, with the option of another year.

Romano added that United are “expected to turn attention to different targets.” According a separate report, the Red Devils have already identified their first-choice alternative to Baleba.

Manchester United to make move for Adam Wharton

UtdXclusive quote the source, credited by David Ornstein for first breaking United’s move for Baleba, claiming that United will make “firm enquiries” for Adam Wharton.

The Crystal Palace midfielder, who moved to the south of London in 2024 from Blackburn Rovers, is viewed as one of the Premier League’s most technically secure players in possession.

The 21-year-old lacks Baleba’s robustness and physicality, but he has the positional awareness to shield United’s defence.

However, Palace are also likely to play hardball over the England international, who is tied to Selhurst Park until 2029.

The source further reveals that Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand and Atalanta star Ederson are also on United’s short list.

Man United could use Mason Mount in the middle of the park

Ahead of United’s Premier League opener against Arsenal, Ruben Amorim was asked about United’s midfield situation.

The ex-Chelsea man certainly has the intensity and legs needed to play that role. However, playmakers Bruno Fernandes and Mount’s tendency to move higher up the field could leave United vulnerable in transition.
