FC Barcelona received a cruel blow few days ago when it emerged that their captain Frenkie de Jong had suffered a medial collateral ligament injury and will be out of action for the foreseeable future.

The Dutch international is set to miss out on action for the next few months. There was a lot of controversies surrounding how the injury transpired.

Eventually, Frenkie himself had to come out with a statement to reveal the events that led to his injury and hitting back at those who questioned his commitment to the club.

Barcelona and Frenkie at a stand-off

Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, the club and Frenkie de Jong are in a stand-off on how the injury to his knee needs to be treated.

Barcelona believe Frenkie should undergo surgery to ensure complete recovery from the injury but that would see him miss out on much of the action this season.

Frenkie, on the other hand, is so far opting to treat this conservatively. While that would see him return to action sooner than if he did undergo surgery, there could be complications in his recovery.

The good thing for Hansi Flick is that despite the absence of the captain, he is not short of midfield options and should be able to manage the situation.

Barcelona have the likes of Pedri, Gavi, Marc Bernal, Marc Casado and Dani Olmo who can play in that position and so can Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen.

There are also promising La Masia options like Xavi Espart, Tommy Marques, Guille Fernandez and Brian Farinas who can operate in that role for the Catalan club.

While there is no doubt that Frenkie’s leadership and calmness in midfield will be missed, the important thing from a Barcelona perspective is that he makes a proper recovery from this injury.

At 29, the Dutchman is reaching the stage of his career where recovery from injury could be that much more difficult and Barcelona need to be very careful in how they handle it.

It remains to be seen if Barcelona eventually convince Frenkie de Jong to undergo surgery and how his rehabilitation period plays out.
