Last week, Barcelona finalised Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s loan to Girona for the rest of the season, leaving the armband vacant. The 33-year-old moved after being told he would not be counted on at the Spotify Camp Nou, with Hansi Flick proceeding with Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny as his first-team goalkeepers.
According to Cadena SER, Ronald Araujo has been officially appointed club captain, with Frenkie de Jong, Pedri and Raphinha completing the captaincy group.
If none of those four are on the pitch, the armband would pass to Eric Garcia or Ferran Torres, the report added. Flick recently highlighted Garcia’s leadership qualities.
Ter Stegen had worn the armband since August 2024 after replacing Sergi Roberto. He was stripped of it last summer during a dispute over using his salary to register Joan Garcia, then reinstated the following day.
He will take it back when he returns from his Girona loan. Barcelona are one point clear of Real Madrid in La Liga. They have aspirations to retain the Copa del Rey and hope to end their 11-year wait for the Champions League.
