Barcelona are closing in on one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in Spanish football, with the club leading the race to secure the signature of Girona prospect Enzo Perez.

According to SPORT, the Blaugrana have made significant progress in their efforts to bring the talented youngster back to the club, despite strong competition from Real Madrid, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and several other teams monitoring his development.

The 14-year-old midfielder has been one of the standout performers in Girona’s youth setup this season and recently helped the club’s Under-14 side win their league title while also reaching the final of the Catalan Championship.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

However, the latest indications suggest Barcelona are in the strongest position to secure his future.

Barcelona gain crucial advantage

As reported by the outlet, Perez carefully considered proposals and approaches from several clubs before making his decision.

As such, Real Madrid were among the teams showing serious interest in the youngster, while Atletico Madrid and Villarreal also explored the possibility of signing him.

Furthermore, Manchester City had a different strategy in mind, hoping the midfielder would continue developing at Girona before eventually making the move to England once he reached the appropriate age.

The Premier League club viewed Girona as the ideal environment for Perez’s development and intended to keep him within the City Football Group pathway before bringing him to the Etihad Stadium later in his career.

Perez wants Barcelona

Despite those opportunities, Perez’s preference has always centred around two possibilities – either remaining at Girona or returning to Barcelona.

The Blaugrana’s determination to re-sign the midfielder appears to have played a decisive role.

One of the most interesting aspects of this story is Perez’s previous connection with Barcelona.

Before joining Girona, the midfielder spent three years in Barcelona’s youth system after arriving from Sant Cugat.

Despite showing promise, the club eventually decided not to continue with him, leading to his departure.

Since then, however, his development has accelerated considerably, and he is now ready to return to Barcelona, where his Luca currently plays in the U-16 side.
