Barcelona are weighing up three potential opponents for the 2026 Joan Gamper Trophy as they look to finalise their pre-season preparations.

According to SPORT, Dutch giants Ajax have emerged as the primary target for the traditional curtain-raiser, which serves as the official unveiling of the squad to supporters.

A tribute to Johan Cruyff

The preference for Ajax is deeply rooted in club heritage. The fixture is being envisioned as a tribute to the late Johan Cruyff, a legendary figure who defined the footballing philosophies of both institutions.

2026 marks the 10th anniversary of his passing, making a “Cruyff Derby” a fitting centrepiece for the match.

Should the clash materialise, it would also mark a special occasion for Frenkie de Jong, who has never faced Ajax since joining Barcelona in 2019, and has now become the Dutchman with the most appearances in the Catalans’ history.

Alternatives on the table

While negotiations with the Amsterdam-based club are taking place, they are not yet final.

Consequently, Barcelona have identified two other high-profile alternatives to ensure the celebration proceeds as planned.

RB Leipzig are among the top choices, although initial scheduling complications had briefly stalled those talks.

Additionally, Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, from whom Barça signed Hamza Abdelkarim during the January transfer window, are being considered as a diverse option.

The match is expected to be a key milestone in the club’s return to the Spotify Camp Nou. While recent renovations forced last year’s edition to move to Estadi Johan Cruyff, the 2026 fixture will take place at the iconic stadium.
