According to an update from Mundo Deportivo, it has been learned that Barcelona have reservations about signing Rafael Leao, with the club identifying key tactical concerns that could ultimately rule out a summer move.

The AC Milan winger has been closely monitored by Barcelona’s scouting team in recent months.

In fact, the outlet mentions that club officials have attended multiple matches to assess his performance levels, focusing not just on his attacking output but also his overall contribution within a structured system.

There is no doubt about Leao’s strengths.

His pace, physicality, and ability to break defensive lines make him one of the most dangerous wide players in Europe when in possession.

Barcelona recognise that quality, and his attacking profile is highly rated. However, the concerns lie in what he offers without the ball.

What’s the story?

Barcelona’s current tactical direction under Hansi Flick places heavy emphasis on pressing, defensive work rate, and positional discipline from wide players.

It is in these areas that Leao is seen as falling short.

The club believes that his intensity in defensive transitions and his consistency in pressing opponents do not meet the standards required for Flick’s system.

In a setup where wingers are expected to contribute heavily both offensively and defensively, this becomes a decisive factor.

Despite the growing links, Leao is not being treated as a priority target.

In fact, he has been offered to Barcelona in recent weeks, with Milan reportedly valuing him at around €50 million

From the player’s side, there is openness to a move to Spain, which initially made the situation appear more realistic.

Even so, Barcelona’s internal evaluation is leaning in a different direction.

While club president Joan Laporta is understood to appreciate Leao’s attacking qualities, the sporting department is placing more weight on tactical fit and long-term balance within the squad.

As things stand, Leao is viewed as an alternative rather than a priority.

Barcelona are continuing to explore the market for wingers who fit in well with their current demands and Leao is not one of them.
