There was surprise last Thursday when Inigo Martinez did not play a single minute in Barcelona’s match against FC Seoul, with Gerard Martin getting the nod ahead of him as the left-sided centre-back in the second period.

Indeed, as the second half began at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, many watching at home were left surprised as manager Hansi Flick rang in the changes.

Andreas Christensen came on as the right-sided centre-back, replacing Ronald Araujo, and scored a stunning goal from over 30 metres out. Logic suggested that Martinez would be alongside him on the left, but it was Gerard Martin.

The move was rather unexpected. At first, it seemed like a routine rotation, perhaps to give Jofre Torrents some minutes as well. But Inigo did not make an appearance at all for the rest of the game.

Martinez missed due to fatigue

Now, according to SPORT, the reason for Inigo’s absence was not injury or discomfort, but simple fatigue. It was a matter of precaution, handled by head coach Hansi Flick.

Inigo was a key figure for Barcelona last season, forming an excellent partnership with Pau Cubarsi. However, it is worth noting that he is now 34 years old. As such, his minutes must be carefully managed to ensure he remains effective and important throughout the campaign.

Barring any surprises, the former Athletic Club and Real Sociedad defender is expected to return to the starting line-up on Monday in the final match of the tour against Daegu FC.

After the match, Barcelona will fly directly back to Spain, concluding an intense ten-day tour across Asia.

As for Gerard Martin, he performed solidly in a rather unfamiliar role. Along with Inigo and Alejandro Balde, he is one of the squad’s three left-footed defenders.

And his ability to play in the centre-back position offers valuable cover for Flick and provides welcome relief in terms of squad depth.
