Joao Cancelo has cast fresh doubt over his future, admitting that he is seriously considering a return to boyhood club Benfica despite Barcelona’s desire to keep him beyond this season.

Currently on loan from Al Hilal, Cancelo’s situation remains open. He still has one year left on his contract in Saudi Arabia, but his performances at Barcelona have significantly boosted his value, making his next move far from straightforward.

Speaking in an interview with Canal 11, Cancelo made his long-term intentions clear, revealing a strong emotional pull towards Benfica, the club where he began his professional journey.

“I’ve already achieved more than I ever expected, but playing for Benfica is like playing basketball – it’s all about the love of the game.

I’m prepared to take a pay cut,” admitted the Portuguese as per SPORT.

What about Barcelona?

Barcelona, on their part, are not ready to lose him, having already informed his camp that he is part of their plans, especially given his ability to operate on both flanks.

Internally, he is viewed as a key piece in Hansi Flick’s system.

The Catalan side is prepared to offer Cancelo a two-year deal on manageable terms, but only if he can secure his release from Al Hilal. That, however, remains a major obstacle.

The Saudi club is demanding compensation of around €8 million or a player included in the deal.

In that regard, one name discussed is Marc Casado, although the Barcelona midfielder is not keen on making the move, complicating negotiations.

Financially, Al Hilal are also motivated to offload Cancelo to avoid paying his salary next season, but they are not willing to let him leave without a return, especially after his strong campaign in Spain.

Ultimately, the decision could come down to Cancelo himself, as he will have to choose between continuity at Barcelona and the emotional connection to Benfica.
