Gerard Martin is gearing for his third season in the Barcelona first team, but it will be first where he begins as a starter. The 24-year-old nailed down one of the two centre-back spots during the 2025-26 campaign, and he looks set to retain it when the action gets back underway next month.

Hansi Flick’s decision to count on Martin as a central defender is one that raised eyebrows initially, although it has undoubtedly been vindicated. As per COPE, he spoke glowingly on his manager, whom he credits with being the one to have turned him into a player that can start regularly for Barcelona.

Martin reacts to transfer speculation

In recent weeks, Martin has been linked with both Chelsea and AC Milan, which underlines how well he has done since establishing himself as a regular starter. However, he’s clear that he only sees himself staying at Barcelon, the club of his life.

“It is true that things are sounding, I do not know to what extent they are true, because I, officially, have not received anything. If it were up to me, I would not move from here. I feel the confidence of the coach and the club, and I want to continue in that line this year, getting better and better.”

Martin was also asked about his reaction to Real Madrid’s transfer business this summer. While he acknowledged that Rodri would be “a great signing” for Los Blancos, he does no feel threatened by events at the Bernabeu.
