Barcelona fans were treated to a rare sight of Ansu Fati this midweek, as the forward made his first appearance for the club since August 2023, as he featured against AS Monaco.

After missing out on pre-season due to a foot injury, Fati was given a brief cameo, playing nine minutes towards the end of the match.

Despite the limited time, his presence on the pitch signalled a crucial step in his recovery and re-integration into the squad, which could be important as Barcelona gear up for a league contest against Villarreal this weekend.

Crucial period ahead for Fati?

As reported by SPORT, the upcoming period could be a crucial one for Fati, as he looks to make a solid impression.

With Ferran Torres suspended and Dani Olmo unavailable, Fati has an excellent chance to earn more minutes as the season progresses.

His versatility allows him to play in multiple positions, whether on the left wing, as an attacking midfielder, or even as a striker. In fact, it was reported earlier that Flick has special plans to utilise Fati as a number nine this season.

Fati’s brilliant record vs Villarreal

Villarreal is a familiar foe for Ansu Fati and one against whom he has consistently delivered.

The young forward has scored four goals in six La Liga appearances against the Yellow Submarine, making them one of his favourite opponents.

His first strike came in July 2020 in a 4-1 Barça win, followed by a double in September of the same year. His most recent goal against Villarreal came in October 2022, contributing to Barcelona’s 3-0 victory.

Given Villarreal’s defensive struggles against Fati in past encounters, he could be a game-changer if he features in Sunday’s clash.
