The Spanish champions are keen to sign Alvarez, who has emerged as one of the most in-demand talents of the summer transfer window.
Real Madrid failed with a club record €150m (£130m) offer earlier in the transfer window, with Atletico rejecting the approach of their city rivals.
Real Madrid have since cooled that interest, with no new approach since their proposal was rejected earlier this month.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Real's priority is Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise, though a deal looks difficult. Bayern have insisted that Olise is not for sale at any price this summer.
Alongside Barcelona,Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have also been named as suitors for Alvarez, but it's the Catalans who are most active in their pursuit.
The 26-year-old has been one ofLa Liga's top forwards since signing for Atletico from Manchester City in an £81.5m deal in 2024.
He has scored 49 goals in 106 games for Atletico, who do not want to sell the Argentine. Barcelona view Alvarez as the ideal successor to Robert Lewandowski, following the veteran's exit from the Camo Nou. The 37-year-old is in talks over a potential move to Major League Soccer.
