Speaking in an interview with ESPN, on-loan Barcelona forward Marcus Rashford has made it clear that he wishes to stay at the club beyond the ongoing season.

The 27-year-old attacker joined the Blaugrana this past summer, arriving on a season-long loan deal from Manchester United. The agreement also contains a €30 million permanent buy option that the Catalans can activate at the end of the season.

So far, Rashford has made an impactful start to life at Barça, racking up five goals and six assists from 12 games in all competitions.

Rashford wants to stay

During the interview with ESPN, Rashford opened up on his exit from Manchester United and move to Barcelona, stating that he needed a change after spending more than half his life with the Red Devils.

“It was so many years in one place,” Rashford said. “People forget this, but 24 years, 23 years of my life, was with Manchester United. So sometimes you just need a change. I think maybe this is the case with me, and yeah, I’m enjoying everything.”

The England international further revealed that this was not the first time he had spoken to Barcelona about a move.

“I just believe that things happen when they’re supposed to happen,” Rashford said.

“It’s not the first time I spoke with Barcelona about potentially coming here, but for whatever reasons, it didn’t happen in the past, and now is my opportunity to make it happen.”

Talking about how things are going for him in the Catalan capital, Rashford noted: “I feel like there’s no time like the present now. So I just take things day to day.

“The key thing for me is just to continue to improve because when you retire, you’re going to miss everything – the good stuff, the bad stuff – you’re going to miss it about the sport.

“Every day I just take it day by day and just try to improve from the day before.”

Concluding, Rashford made it clear that he was desperate to remain at Barcelona beyond this season, instead of returning to Manchester United, where he has a contract until 2028.

“Oh yeah, for sure,” he said.

“I’m enjoying this football club, and I think for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game. For a player is an honour.”

Barcelona, for their part, are delighted with how Rashford has begun, but are in no hurry to make a decision over his permanent signing.
