The second leg of the UEFA Champions League play-offs delivered clarity for Barcelona ahead of Friday’s round of 16 draw at UEFA headquarters in Nyon.

After weeks of uncertainty, the picture is now much clearer for Hansi Flick’s side.

Under the new Champions League format introduced by UEFA, the top eight teams from the league phase are paired based on their final classification.

Barcelona finished fifth in the table, just behind sixth-placed Chelsea. Because of this seeding structure, the two sides were split into different pairing brackets.

That meant Barcelona and Chelsea both knew that their round of 16 opponents would emerge from two specific playoff ties.

One tie featured AS Monaco against Paris Saint-Germain, while the other saw Qarabag FK take on Newcastle United.

Barcelona’s possible opponents

The two contests could not have been more different. The all-French battle between Monaco and PSG was tight, tense and finely balanced across both legs, but eventually, PSG emerged victorious.

In contrast, the clash involving Newcastle was far more one-sided, with the English side dominantly imposing themselves.

Barcelona fans will also remember that Flick’s men already faced Newcastle on the opening matchday of the league phase.

On that occasion, Barça travelled to England and secured an impressive 2-1 victory on hostile ground.

There is also a strategic element to consider. If the French representative emerges as Barcelona’s opponent, the Blaugrana will be placed on the left side of the knockout bracket.

However, if Newcastle are confirmed as their rival, Barcelona will move to the right side of the draw.

One thing is already guaranteed. The decisive second leg of the round of 16 will take place at the Spotify Camp Nou, giving Flick’s side a major advantage in front of their home supporters.

Now, all eyes turn to Friday’s draw, as Barcelona know the possibilities.
