Jorge Salinas has finished an outstanding season by winning the European Under-19 Championship with Spain, and his attention must now turn towards resolving his club future.
The Racing Santander defender impressed throughout the tournament, showing his versatility by operating both at left-back and centre-back. His performances have only strengthened the belief that he is ready for a higher-level challenge.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona remain interested in signing the 19-year-old, although the dispute over his valuation has prevented the operation from advancing. Racing accept that Salinas could leave despite his contract running until June 2029.
Barcelona believed the defender was available for €8 million before 1 July, while Racing argued that promotion to La Liga had already increased his release clause to €16 million.
With the new season now officially underway, the higher figure applies. Barca had only been willing to negotiate around €8 million and even explored alternative formulas to make the agreement more attractive.
The club reportedly offered the possibility of including an academy player in the deal. Another option involved signing Salinas and allowing him to remain on loan at Racing for one more season, giving him regular top-flight football while protecting Barcelona’s investment.
Jorge Mendes is handling the player’s affairs, and Salinas must now decide which project suits his development best. Atletico Madrid have also shown interest, meaning Barcelona cannot assume they will remain his preferred destination indefinitely.
From Barca’s perspective, the sporting appeal is obvious. Salinas is young, left-footed, and comfortable in two defensive positions. Those qualities would give Hansi Flick a player who could develop into a useful first-team option without requiring an immediate starting role.
However, Barcelona must remain disciplined. €16 million is a significant investment for a defender still taking his first steps at the highest level, particularly when the squad already has several central defenders.
Winning the Under-19 European Championship has strengthened Salinas’ reputation, but it should not force Barca into an inflated deal. The player’s desire may now be decisive. If he strongly chooses Barcelona, Racing could eventually become more open to a creative agreement. Until then, the club will watch and wait.
