If there is a single player you want to single out for praise from an FC Barcelona perspective this season for taking his game to the next level and really exploding, without a doubt, it will have to be Fermin Lopez.
The Spaniard is starting to feel like the player who spots the opening before everyone else. At Barcelona, that is becoming one of his most valuable traits, because he is not just running hard or arriving in good areas by chance. He is increasingly reading the exact moment a game needs to be cut open.
According to Mundo Deportivo, that is exactly how his role is now being viewed inside this Barca midfield. The report describes Pedri as the conductor, Marc Bernal as the anchor, and Fermin as the scalpel, the player making the precise attacking cuts that open rival defences.
Fermin’s game is built around timing, when to change the speed of his movement, when to break beyond the line, when to arrive late into the box, and when to set up a team-mate instead. Those are not random actions, they are decisions made at full speed.
There is also a technical sharpness to him that matters hugely for Barcelona. This is precisely the reason why Hansi Flick seems to have him just ahead of Dani Olmo in the big Champions League games this season.
Fermin has 12 goals and 16 assists across competitions. From a Barcelona perspective, that is what makes him so dangerous. He is not a pure controller and not just a runner either. He is becoming the midfielder who senses exactly when control has to turn into incision.
Fermin is no longer a prospect and has now become a key star in Barcelona. Let’s hope he can continue this form until the end of the season.
