Barcelona are keeping a close watch on AC Milan superstar Rafael Leao as he faces a challenging sporting situation at AC Milan, where he has lost his starting position this season due to his strained relationship with manager Paulo Fonseca, reports SPORT.

The Portuguese winger has spent the last three matches on the bench, with this development catching the attention of the Catalan club’s sporting department and particularly club president Joan Laporta.

Barcelona wanted Leao last summer

The Blaugrana previously explored the possibility of signing Leao when the Nico Williams deal fell through.

There was talk about the Portuguese international himself being open to the switch to Barcelona, though the move proved unfeasible at the time.

The Italian club had declared him absolutely untransferable last summer when Barcelona attempted to approach them through agent Jorge Mendes.

The operation was always going to be impossible to pull off though due to Barça’s salary cap constraints.

Looking ahead to next summer, Barcelona continue to prioritise the signing of a left-winger, with the Portuguese international remaining on their shortlist, provided the price is right.

What’s happening with Leao?

The 24-year-old finds himself in an unexpected predicament at AC Milan.

Leao renewed his contract with Milan last year, extending until 2028 without a release clause, meaning any interested club must negotiate directly with the Italian side.

While his departure seemed implausible a few months ago, the current dressing room conflict could precipitate the end of his Milan chapter.

AC Milan manager Fonseca has attempted to defuse the situation recently, saying: “There’s no conflict with Leao. As manager, I make the decisions, and everyone must give their maximum.”

Despite these words, there appears to be some unrest at Milan with Barcelona paying close attention. The player has remained silent about his situation, but sources suggest he might consider a move if the Rossoneri retain Fonseca long-term.

Leao is said to be growing increasingly frustrated with his situation at Milan, and with his market value potentially declining, Barcelona are waiting to see if he becomes available at a reasonable price.

Sporting director Deco and manager Hansi Flick view him as an exceptional talent for the left wing, though any potential transfer would need to align with the club’s financial parameters.
