One of the major talking points of the recent international break was the failure of the Italian national team to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the third time in a row.
Indeed, the Azzurri will once again not be a part of the showpiece event of world football after losing their qualifying playoff encounter against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Following the loss, Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni, who is a target for FC Barcelona, has come under intense scrutiny in Italy after he was sent off during the game for a reckless challenge, which left his team at a disadvantage.
Despite what went down with Bastoni and Italy, Barcelona have not changed their stance with regard to him being their top target, confirms Fabrizio Romano.
Indeed, the Blaugrana have spoken to the defender’s entourage and reassured them about the club’s appreciation for him and their strong interest in signing him in the summer.

As such, things are progressing well with very positive feelings between the player and the club when it comes to matters such as contract and salary.
Bastoni, for his part, is understood to be very keen and excited at the possibility of playing for Barcelona next season. And with the club confirming that their intentions have not changed, the operation seems to be progressing forward smoothly.
The next step for Barça will be to begin formal talks with Bastoni’s club, Inter Milan, and reach an agreement over a transfer fee for the 26-year-old.
Reports in Italy suggest that the Nerazzurri will seek at least €70 million for their defensive pillar. However, Barcelona are expected to try to bring that figure down, with the possibility of a player being offered in exchange very likely.
For now, what is clear is that things remain positive between Bastoni’s camp and Barça despite what happened during the international break.
