It has been widely reported that Ronald Araujo will not be leaving Barcelona this month, and instead, he will sign a new contract. The Uruguayan defender had been desperate to leave as soon as possible, but after discussions with sporting director Deco on Tuesday, he has now been convinced to remain in Catalonia.
Relevo have opened up on the talks between Deco and Araujo, and according to the report, the former issued three promises that led to a positive solution. The first involved Barcelona’s chances of success this season, and the thought of multiple trophies (on top of the already-won Spanish Super Cup) played a role.
Secondly, Deco promised Araujo that he would receive a significant wage increase in his new contract, and his release clause – which is currently worth €1bn – will be lowered to an amount that makes it more possible for clubs to activate.
Retaining the services of Araujo is excellent news for Barcelona, although it does appear to have come at a significant cost. Nevertheless, the club’s return to La Liga’s 1:1 rule does mean that they can take more risks in a financial sense.
