Karim Adeyemi will have to reconsider his preferred shirt number at FC Barcelona, with La Liga regulations preventing the German winger from wearing the number he originally wanted.

According to SPORT, Adeyemi had hoped to take the No. 27 shirt when beginning his new chapter at Barca. The number holds personal significance for the 24-year-old and has accompanied him at previous stages of his career.

Why Adeyemi cannot wear No. 27

The problem is that La Liga regulations only allow players registered with the first team to wear numbers between 1 and 25.

Numbers from 26 onwards are reserved for players registered with reserve-team status, meaning Adeyemi would not be permitted to wear No. 27 if he is registered as a senior Barcelona player.

The report claims Adeyemi was previously unaware of the regulation and only recently discovered the restriction. As a result, he will have to select from the available first-team numbers once his transfer is formally completed.

Barcelona have encountered similar situations before. Roony Bardghji, for example, initially wore No. 28 while he was not registered as a full first-team player before later changing his number.

Adeyemi’s preferred number is ultimately a minor issue compared with what Barcelona will expect from him on the pitch, but shirt numbers can carry significant personal meaning for players.

The German is still waiting for the final administrative steps of his transfer from Borussia Dortmund to be completed. Although he has already arrived in Barcelona, undergone his medical and met some of his new teammates, he cannot yet officially train with Flick’s squad.

Barca and Dortmund are completing the remaining documentation, with only minor details standing between Adeyemi and the formal announcement of his move.

Once everything is signed, attention can finally turn towards football and the number he will wear.

The No. 27 may have been Adeyemi’s dream choice, but unless his registration situation is unusual, La Liga’s rules mean his Barcelona career will have to begin with a different number on his back.
