Spain midfielder Pedri has praised Portugal star Vitinha ahead of their blockbuster World Cup round-of-16 clash.

Speaking in an interview with AS, the FC Barcelona star reflected on the individual battle that could define one of the tournament’s biggest knockout ties.

The two midfielders have crossed paths several times in recent seasons, including in the Champions League, and Pedri admitted he has been impressed every time.

Pedri said:

“Vitinha is top, especially with his control of the ball and the way he manages the tempo of the game.”

Pedri full of respect for Portugal star

The 23-year-old highlighted Vitinha’s work rate as one of the qualities that stands out most.

He continued:

“When I’ve played against him, what surprised me most is how much he runs. He’s never standing still. He always finds the free teammate with his pass and, as I said, he’s top. One of the best midfielders in the world.”

Pedri’s comments underline the respect Spain have for Portugal despite entering the knockout stages as one of the tournament favourites.

The Barcelona midfielder also acknowledged that the meeting between the two nations feels bigger than a typical round-of-16 tie, given the quality on both sides.

He said:

“They are two great national teams that can win the World Cup. It will be a difficult game, but we want to go through no matter what.”

While Pedri reserved special praise for Vitinha, he also made it clear that Spain are determined to avenge their UEFA Nations League final defeat to Portugal earlier this year.

From a Barcelona perspective, Pedri’s admiration carries extra weight. The Blaugrana midfielder has developed into one of Europe’s elite playmakers under Hansi Flick, and his recognition of Vitinha reflects the level of competition among the game’s top midfielders.

Their duel in midfield could prove decisive as Spain and Portugal battle for a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
