The sending-off of Pau Cubarsi late in the first half changed the complexion of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie between FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

The young defender was shown a direct red card for a last-man foul on Atleti’s Giuliano Simeone, and Julian Alvarez went on to score from the resulting free-kick, taking the lead at the Spotify Camp Nou on the cusp of half-time.

The development forced Hansi Flick to change his plans, with the Barcelona manager making two half-time substitutions – Gavi coming on for Pedri, who was dealing with hamstring discomfort and Robert Lewandowski making way for Fermin Lopez in a tactical move.

Lewandowski disappointed with substitution

Now, according to SPORT, Lewandowski felt disappointed with being substituted at half-time in such an important match for the team.

The 37-year-old veteran superstar started as the main striker against Atletico, but struggled against tight marking in a high-intensity match. While he had some lapses in pressing, including in the build-up to the red card, he also had chances to score.

In a match where a finisher and reference point in attack could have been needed in the second half, Flick decided to substitute him and move Marcus Rashford centrally, a decision the Pole did not welcome.

Lewandowski, this season, has alternated starts with Ferran Torres and even Dani Olmo, who played as a false nine last weekend at the Metropolitano. He has played 39 matches this season, scoring 17 goals and providing three assists.

No problems with Flick

Despite the disappointment, Lewandowski maintains a good relationship with Flick, based on mutual respect. He also remains a highly influential figure in the dressing room.

The German coach has managed the veteran forward’s minutes carefully this season to ensure he remains fresh towards the end of the campaign, and he is in good physical condition.

There was no injury issue in the match against Atletico, and his substitution was tactical – a decision that the former Bayern Munich man was disappointed by as he believes he could have contributed in the second half.

In the coming days, Lewandowski, whose contract expires in June, is expected to hold talks with Flick regarding his future. His intention is to continue at Barcelona, as he feels capable of performing at the highest level for another year.

Barça, for their part, are planning to offer him a one-year contract extension, but with reduced wages and a secondary role. Ultimately, the decision will rest with the player, who has received significant offers from elsewhere.
