In terms of trophies, Hansi Flick’s second season in charge of FC Barcelona is unlikely to match the heights of his debut campaign. During his first year, the German coach guided the Catalan giants to a domestic treble, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup, while also reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
This season has not been as successful in terms of silverware. Barcelona have already lifted the Spanish Super Cup and remain on track to defend their La Liga crown, but their journey in both the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League ended earlier than expected. This regression in knockout competitions has raised some concerns about the team’s overall consistency at the highest level.
However, there are still some clear areas of improvement. One of the most notable positives has been Barcelona’s ability to keep clean sheets in La Liga. According to Mundo Deportivo, after recording 13 clean sheets in the previous campaign, the Blaugranes have now surpassed that tally this season, with five matches remaining.
The record was improved with a 2-0 win over Getafe, a result that saw them register another clean sheet and go beyond last season’s mark. A significant share of the credit for this improvement goes to Joan Garcia, who was signed from RCD Espanyol before the start of this season and has played an important role between the posts.
Thus, Flick’s side has shown a clear step forward in this particular aspect, even if their overall defensive performances have not always looked as solid as in the previous campaign.
With five matches still remaining, Barcelona now have a good opportunity to further improve this record. Even though their defense has shown more weaknesses at times this season, their ability to keep clean sheets in La Liga suggests there are still positives to take from this campaign.
