As Barcelona head into the summer transfer window, the left-back position is internally being discussed as a possible weak spot for the first time in years.
Alejandro Balde’s inconsistency and injuries have left the Spaniard as a candidate to possibly be sold in June, especially after Joao Cancelo arrived and showed the impact a world-class left-back can have on the team.
Alejandro Grimaldo, on that front, has been linked as a possible target for Barcelona, especially given his roots in La Masia. Word, however, had it that he was close to an agreement with Besiktas.
Now, as claimed by Matteo Moretto in a recent update, Grimaldo’s priority is returning to Spain and that objective does not align with the Besiktas story from earlier in the week.

The player deeply wishes to return to Spain and play in La Liga, and there are two clubs that are monitoring his situation keeping that factor in consideration. The identity of the two clubs remains anonymous, but Barcelona are likely to be one of them.
Grimaldo currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen and is likely to leave his club for a fee slightly below €15 million. The sum is likely to linger between the €10 million and €15 million mark as matters stand.
For a player of Grimaldo’s quality, that sum is a bargain indeed and Barcelona will have keen eyes on how his situation develops.
Should Balde be sold in any case, the Bayer Leverkusen player appears to be the most logical option to replace him and possibly serve as an upgrade over him. The Joao Cancelo negotiation and fee, however, will also play an indirect part.
