Manchester United seems to be closing on a deal for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte. However, a former player suggests the Red Devils should consider a more experienced player instead of spending big on Ugarte.

According to a recent report from L’Equipe, PSG and Manchester United are nearing the final stages of securing a loan deal for Ugarte, which includes a €60 million obligation to buy. The two clubs have made significant progress in their talks, and the deal could be finalized in the next few hours.

Nonetheless, one former Manchester United star, Paul Scholes, believes that the club should pursue FC Barcelona veteran İlkay Gündoğan, who is reportedly returning to Manchester City, rather than going after Ugarte. Moreover, Scholes notes that the veteran midfielder is what the squad needs.

“Gündoğan. I know it’s not going to happen, but I think he’s the type of player Man United need,” Scholes told The Overlap alongside Jamie Carragher (h/t Metro). “A Zubimendi… or I’m going to say Gündoğan. A controlling midfield player just to take the sting out of play. Gündoğan is perfect for that.”

Ugarte featured in 37 games for the reigning Ligue 1 champions last season, contributing three assists. The former Sporting Lisbon star started the season strongly, but his playing time decreased in the latter half as he was mainly used as a rotational player rather than a regular starter.
