Robert Lewandowski was the impactful substitute Barcelona needed in order to navigate a rather difficult challenge against Atletico Madrid.

The Polish striker came on during the final phase of the game and scored a lucky goal in the 87th minute to help Barcelona secure a late winner.

Despite the unconventional nature of the goal, it marked a major personal landmark for the Polish striker, who will not be participating in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Lewandowski equals Hristo Stoichkov’s record

Thanks to his goal against Atletico Madrid on Saturday, Lewandowski has now equalled the record of club legend Hristo Stoichkov in the all-time goalscorers’ list.

Indeed, the Pole has now scored 117 goals for Barcelona in all competitions, the same as Stoichkov.

What is perhaps worth noting is that Lewandowski has achieved the milestone in just 185 competitive matches, whereas it took Stoichkov 255 matches to score the same number of goals.

Thanks to his goal, Lewandowski also moves into 11th place in the list of Barcelona’s all-time goalscorers – tied with Stoichkov. He is just three goals away from entering the top ten and equalling the record of Josep Escola.

Realistically, Lewandowski can end the season by becoming Barcelona’s eighth-highest all-time scorer, as he only requires six more goals to beat 8th placed Carles Rexach.

In order to enter the top seven, Lewandowski would have to score at least 12 more goals to equal the record currently held by Mariano Martin.

Lewandowski, though, would be more than happy simply entering the top eight, considering the fact that the Pole had only joined the club in 2022 and has since been scoring goals for fun.

It will be interesting to see if achieving that milestone could convince him to continue for another season at Barcelona.
