The arrival of Hansi Flick on the FC Barcelona bench has led to significant changes in the roles of several players in the Blaugrana team, most of them for the better. However, one player who has clearly seen his role decline since the Germans’ arrival is the defender Ronald Araujo.

Before his injury in the summer of 2024, the Uruguayan was a key part of the Catalan team, especially under Xavi Hernandez. However, as he returned from his injury, he found Hansi Flick to be fully reliant on the center-back pairing of Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi.

Now, even with the departure of Martinez, Araujo has not really been able to cement himself as a guaranteed starter in the middle of the Barcelona backline. He continues to compete with Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia for minutes, leaving his long-term role uncertain.

Despite this, reports in England suggest Araujo continues to attract strong interest abroad. According to The Daily Briefing, Liverpool are assessing defensive reinforcements as they brace for the possible departure of Ibrahima Konate and contend with Giovanni Leoni’s long-term ACL injury. Among the options under consideration is Araujo, whose name has been flagged as one to watch.

From Barcelona’s point of view, there is no active intention to part ways with their vice-captain. However, if Araujo is not satisfied with his role under Flick, he could consider other options, and the Catalans may be open to offloading him for €50–60 million.

The 25-year-old only renewed his contract in January 2025, committing to the club until 2031, and remains highly valued in the dressing room. For now, the Uruguayan’s immediate focus is on fighting for his place under Flick and regaining the undisputed role he once held. However, it remains to be seen how his situation develops and whether Liverpool’s interest ultimately translates into a concrete offer.
