Gavi’s injury has been a heavy blow for Barcelona. For the player himself, it was an unexpected setback.
Before undergoing arthroscopy, it was believed he would be sidelined for just five or six weeks. Instead, severe meniscus damage required suturing, extending his recovery time to four or five months.
For the team, it is equally costly: Barça lose not only a key figure in midfield, but also a much-loved player in the dressing room.
Given the length of Gavi’s injury, Barcelona are permitted to sign a replacement, as rules allow reinforcements when a player is out for at least four months – like they brought in Wojciech Szczesny last year when Marc-Andre ter Stegen was sidelined
Yet the club’s stance is clear: no new signing will be made, reports MARCA, before adding that there are several reasons for the Blaugrana to be taking that position.
First, the market is extremely limited, restricted to free agents, and no adequate alternatives are available.

Neither Hansi Flick nor the sporting department wants to bring in a player for the sake of it, and no profile suits Barcelona’s needs.
Financial Fair Play is another factor. While the rules would allow an emergency signing without immediate consequences, the costs would be carried into next season.
That debt is already in place following Ter Stegen’s injury, which enabled the registration of Joan Garcia.
Despite the blow, Barça believe they have enough midfield depth to cover until Gavi’s return in 2026. Players like Eric Garcia could even be pushed into midfield if needed. As such, no direct replacement will be roped in.
Reinforcing another area of the squad has been considered, but is also ruled out. The club points out that even after Gavi’s previous injury, they did not sign a direct replacement – Vitor Roque was brought in instead, but that deal had already been agreed.
