Santos played well but lost 1-0 to Palmeiras in the season’s first derby, with Barreal and Brazão the standouts.
According to Diario Do Peixe, the visitors were arguably better across the 90 minutes. The first-half decider followed Escobar’s clearance in midfield striking a Palmeiras player and releasing Flaco, who scored after Brazão had narrowed the angle. Igor Vinícius recovered from two early cheap fouls, and Lautaro Díaz wasted a big header, sending it against a defender.
After the break Brazão produced two fine saves, yet Palmeiras goalkeeper Carlos Miguel was even busier. Gabigol entered midway through the half, twice shooting from long range and losing possession that sparked counters.
At the back Adonis Frías was secure, while Zé Ivaldo impressed in his passing. Willian Arão screened effectively, strong in the air, and João Schmidt mixed ball-winning with calm distribution as Santos avoided hopeful punts. Rollheiser was intense, with Miguelito lively but less efficient.
Barreal dictated the tempo but did not test the goalkeeper. Robinho Jr nearly forced an equaliser in stoppage time with a fine angled attempt.
Head coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda started five compatriots and left Gabigol out of the XI, with Thaciano’s surprise inclusion adding bite and balance. Santos pressed high, built from the back and created chances, but the result did not reflect their display.
