Álvaro Barreal voiced frustration after Santos lost 3-2 to Fluminense at Vila Belmiro on Sunday, and outlined the incident before the equaliser.
According to Diario Do Peixe, the Argentine midfielder, who scored Santos’ second to restore the lead in the 12th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro, felt his side had chances to win and did not deserve to leave without a point.
Barreal said he suffered cramp during the celebration of his goal, left the pitch for treatment and could not return immediately. While he awaited a substitution that took time to be made, Santos were temporarily a player short when Fluminense levelled.
He described the delay as naive on their part, adding that the hosts were pegged back quickly before conceding the decisive goal.
Barreal called for a swift reaction, saying the squad must keep working and improve on and off the pitch. Santos sit 15th on 13 points, one clear of Corinthians, the first team in the relegation zone, and visit Bahia in Salvador next.
