Barros scored twice at Mineirão to turn Cruzeiro v Vasco on its head, then was sent off as it finished 3-3. The red card means he will miss the derby with Fluminense.
As reported by Globo.com, he became a starter last year during a crisis, after injuries to Jair and Tchê Tchê, and kept his place.
His best form came in the 2025 Copa do Brasil semi-finals against Fluminense, alongside Thiago Mendes. Long identified with Vasco, he baited the rivals with Série C jibes and on social media, including at Canobbio, and trod on the crest, prompting online fury.
This year has been erratic. He was dismissed in a Flamengo clássico for a tackle similar to Sunday’s, and in another meeting with Fluminense he gave away two penalties in one match, which culminated in Vasco’s exit from the state competition.
Renato Gaúcho said he spoke to him after the draw, calling the red card correct but without intent to injure, and noting the two goals had helped. He framed the mistakes as part of a young player’s learning.
Barros had replaced Thiago Mendes in the XI, but under Renato he lost out to Hugo Moura. Wearing 88, he will sit out the next round, while Thiago Mendes returns from a ban for his third yellow.
Vasco are 15th in the league with five points from six rounds. Under Renato they beat Palmeiras and drew with Cruzeiro. Fluminense await on Wednesday at 21:30 at the Maracanã.
