Last week, RB Leipzig star Christoph Baumgartner suffered a heartbreaking injury ahead of the World Cup, forcing him to withdraw from Austria’s squad for the tournament.
According to Krone, the injury is even worse than initially thought, with the Austrian outlet reporting that the 26-year-old could be out for as long as five months. This would mean he would miss the start of the 2026/27 campaign with RB Leipzig.
The report claims that the attacking midfielder has torn the tendon of the rectus femoris muscle on the front of the thigh near the hip attachment.
Baumgartner has already undergone surgery on the injury. His Austria teammate Konrad Laimer recently revealed that the 26-year-old intends to travel to the United States to support the team during the tournament.
“It hurts us a lot,” Laimer said of Baumgartner’s injury.
“We will miss him throughout the World Cup. You cannot replace him one-to-one, but we have to try to absorb his absence as a group.”
