Kicker reports that Bayer Leverkusen and OGC Nice have broken off negotiations over Jonathan Clauss. The Bundesliga outfit wished to acquire the 32-year-old as a potential option for the departed Jeremie Frimpong on the right wing. In the end, Kicker claims the two sides could not agree on a transfer fee for the €5m-valued professional.

The collapse of the deal is of some significance as – during Leverkusen’s opening day loss against Hoffenheim in the league this weekend – new head coach Erk ten Hag had difficulty finding someone to work the right wingback role. Starter Arthur – and later new summer addition Ernest Poku – did not impress in Frimpong’s old slot.

Attacker Natan Tella, who has let it be known that he does not like working as a wingback, was also stationed there briefly to no avail. Kicker’s Leverkusen correspondent Stephan van Nocks does note that Leverkusen management are working hard on signing another unnamed player to fill the need. Van Nocks claims that the completion of this transfer will be “imminent“.
