Bild reports that Bayer Leverkusen are looking to try to extend the contract of left-back Alejandro Grimaldo.

Die Werkself are working on an extension for the 30-year-old, whom they want to keep at the club for the long term. Grimaldo is said to become a leader in the dressing room at the BayArena following the mass exodus of players this summer.

Grimaldo’s contract at Leverkusen expires in 2027, meaning if they cannot agree on a new deal, the club can sell him next summer. The Spanish international has made it clear that before he ends his career, he would like to play in his homeland.

The left-back’s agent was recently at Leverkusen’s 1-1 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga.

Since joining from Benfica in the summer of 2023, Grimaldo has been a revelation. In the title-winning season, the 30-year-old provided 17 assists and scored 12 as Leverkusen completed a domestic double and reached the Europa League final. Last season, he also provided 12 assists in all competitions.

This season, Grimaldo has started off in red-hot form, scoring four and assisting one in six games so far. The Spaniard is Leverkusen’s most important player in the early stages of this campaign.
