FC Bayern are on course to be crowned German champions once again after an unbeaten first half of the season, but how likely are they really to win the title?
Tension in the title fight is currently a foreign concept in the Bundesliga. After 15 match days, FC Bayern are at the top of the table with 41 points and have a nine-point lead over second-placed Dortmund. One would therefore think that the 35th championship title for the German record champions is already as good as certain
The statistics service OPTA almost sees FC Bayern as the next German champions, rating Munich’s chances of winning the championship at 97.5%. No team in Europe has anywhere near as high odds as FCB, not even the French serial champions Paris Saint-Germain can hold a candle to Bayern in this category
However, in a comparison of the top 5 European leagues, PSG is in second place with 88.8%. According to OPTA , FC Barcelona has the third-best chances of winning the local championship title with 77.1%. The analysis platform is less confident about the champions in the Premier League and Serie A. FC Arsenal (68.7%) and Inter Milan (53.9%) currently have the best chances there
Despite the seemingly certain championship, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany does not want to start celebrating just yet. On the contrary: shortly before Christmas, he was extremely humble. After all, nothing has been won in the Champions League and Cup yet. The Belgian knows: „We have lost very little this year and won quite often. In March, we play for the prizes.“
Kompany continues: „In these important moments, we want to take the next step. This year, we’ve laid a good foundation for next year. Next year, we’ll be in a positive position to try everything.“
Even though the Bundesliga is as good as decided, Bayern’s season still has plenty of excitement to offer in the other competitions. The Champions League continues at home against Union Saint-Gilloise on 21 January, followed by the DFB Cup quarter-final against RB Leipzig on 11 February.
