Bayern Munich personnel boss Max Eberl commented on his club’s failed attempts to keep Florian Wirtz in the Bundesliga yesterday. Speaking from Bayern Munich’s Club World Cup training camp in Orlando, Eberl flat out admitted Bayern didn’t have the clout to compete with Wirtz’s future club Liverpool.
“He decided otherwise despite the fact that the talks were very positive,” Eberl – as quoted by transfermarkt.de – said of Wirtz. “I don’t know that we could have paid the price Liverpool that Liverpool is now reportedly playing. One’s initial reaction is ‘damn it’, but whenever one door closes another opens.“
“Now we will reposition ourselves for the future,” Eberl continued. “Florian will make his way in Liverpool. Now we will try to find another outstanding player who will be successful with us.“
Bayern’s chief sporting officer also furnished updates on other players potentially on the move away from Bayern this summer. The FCB board-member-for-sport had chance to comment on Leroy Sané’s unusual and unprecedented move to Galatasaray right in the middle of the forthcoming tournament.
After that, Eberl was quite forthcoming when it came to the status of Sacha Boey, Bryan Zaragoza, Kingsley Coman and Mathys Tel. In the case of Boey and Zaragoza, Bayern are open to sales. Josip Stanisic and (converted) full-back Konrad Laimer render both players expendable.
Sané’s departure – along with that of Thomas Müller – leave Bayern in need of staffing in attack. For this reason, Eberl hinted that the club leaned towards keeping French winger Kinglsey Coman amid exit rumors.
The same nevertheless didn’t apply to French striker Mathys Tel, whom Eberl confirmed might be re-loaned out to Tottenham ahead of the coming season. Eberl did leave the door open to a Coman departure, however, saying “we’ll see what the squad planning looks like” after the tournament.
